The maps below from the Diocese of Pittsburgh show the boundary lines of St. Jude Parish as well as the surrounding parishes. Using the 2020 census, members of the Social Justice Committee were able to identify neighborhoods where people face the challenge of making ends meet (e.g. Upper Lawrenceville, Larimer, and some areas of East Liberty.) The last sentence of our parish Mission Statement reads: “Appreciating the diversity of our East End community, we joyfully follow Christ’s mandate to pursue unity and to serve the poor and marginalized.”
Pray
Lord God, for all those trapped in poverty bring your freedom and fullness of life. For all those with insufficient income, bring employment and creative new ways of earning a living. For nations weighed down by unmanageable debt, bring relief and end to crippling burdens. For communities and countries desperate for help, bring aid and donations with no hidden strings attached. For all of us as we become aware of the challenges in the area we call St. Jude Parish, bring a hunger for change that fuels us to champion your solutions. This we ask in Christ’s name. Amen.
Act
One way we can become involved is to join the St. Jude Parish Saint Vincent de Paul Conference. There are flyers throughout the churches that tell the story about the Society. Conference members meet once a month on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 pm in the Bishop Winter Conference room. One of the key elements of the Conference’s work is to do home visits to assess the needs of the person or family to see if additional help is needed. If a person does not feel comfortable doing home visits, there are other ways to become involved such as donating money in the church poor boxes. If you need additional information, please call 412-404-3524 and leave your name, phone number and message. Someone will get to you.
